Nicola Stephenson was born in Oldham, Greater Manchester, on the 5th of July 1971. Starting her acting career at an early age, her first appearances included parts in several television series and in the film The Rainbow (1989).

Nicola played the part of Margaret Clemence, nanny to Max and Patricia Farnham, middle-class owners of Brookside's No. 7.

In 1990, Nicola joined the cast of Brookside, a thrice-weekly soap opera produced by Mersey Television Ltd.

Set in Liverpool, Brookside centres on the trials and tribulations of families living in the eponymous Close of six houses.
Margaret began a controversial affair with a Catholic Priest, who also happened to be her next-door-neighbour's brother.

Perhaps even more controversially, Margaret later became involved with another of her neighbours, Beth Jordache (played by Anna Friel).

Things were not destined to work out for Margaret and Beth, however

Nicola left Brookside in April 1994.
